Firearms: identifying information.

Abstract

Existing law, effective January 1, 2017, requires a person who manufactures or assembles a firearm to first apply to the Department of Justice for a unique serial number or other identifying mark, with exceptions. Existing law, effective January 1, 2017, requires the department to issue a serial number or other mark of identification to an applicant meeting specified criteria. Existing law, effective January 1, 2017, requires the department to maintain and make available information concerning the number of serial numbers issued pursuant to these provisions. This bill would clarify that the department would be required to maintain and make available information concerning the number of serial numbers or other marks of identification issued pursuant to the above provisions.
