Probation officers: firearms: qualifications.

Abstract

Existing law designates various persons as peace officers, including probation officers and deputy probation officers. Existing law requires all peace officers generally, who carry firearms, to complete training prescribed by the Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) . In addition to this requirement, existing law requires certain peace officers who are permitted to carry firearms to qualify the firearm at least quarterly. This bill would, notwithstanding the above provisions of law, require a probation officer, deputy probation officer, or any superintendent, supervisor, or employee having custodial responsibilities in an institution operated by a probation department, or any transportation officer of a probation department, who is permitted to carry a firearm, to qualify with his or her firearm at least every 6 months, rather than quarterly.
